Nine Nights
A nine nights is a Caribbean funerary rite rooted in African traditions that’s in danger of being lost. Practices differ however the constant is a vigil that takes place over nine nights.
Community members gather to honor the deceased through storytelling and celebration. On the ninth night, it is believed that the deceased can peacefully transition to the realm of the ancestors.
GrowHouse is preserving and evolving this important cultural tradition with community at the Flatbush African Burial Ground, Pratt Institute, and Flatbush Central.
You must register for every night to attend, nightly events will be from 6-9pm.
10/20: OPENING NIGHT at Pratt Institute led by Creative Urban Alchemy (separate registration)
10/21: Honoring Lenape ancestors
10/22: Honoring our Nigerian ancestors
10/23: Honoring our Ghanaian ancestors
10/24: Honoring our Senegambian ancestors
10/25: Honoring our Caribbean ancestors
10/26: Honoring our Southern ancestors
10/27: Honoring unity and Pan-Africanism
10/28: Closing processional
